At a time when women were repressed in almost every way, especially as it relates to their being educated, Joan longs for knowledge. Her novel, Pope Joan, was adapted to film in 2009. She is the author of two books on language, Word Abuse and Mediaspeak, and coauthor of Speaking of Words and Daddys Little Girl. In the novel Pope Joan, Cross creates a plausible story for how a woman could have risen to the position of pope in the early 800s. Cross then moved to Syracuse, New York, with her husband and began teaching in the English department at an upstate New York college. By some, it is believed that a ninth-century woman, disguised as a man, rose to become the only female ever to sit on the throne of St. ![]() Pope Joan’s existence has been denied by the Catholic Church for hundreds and hundreds of years, but her legend continues to live on. But Lewisohn sets such high standards, you can’t help but notice if he falls short once in a while or leaves some questions unanswered. And, as it is, they don’t cast any real blemish over the regular, 840-page version. It may be that some of them are addressed in the extended (double-length) ‘author’s cut’ of the book.
